[Mycolleagues] Mobile Networks & Applications SI - Advances and Applications in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks

Dear Colleagues,
(Sorry for the cross posting!)

*Mobile Networks and Applications (MONET)*

*Special Issue on Advances and Applications in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks*

* *

Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) using all kinds of wireless
technologies has recently received considerable attention. The goal of
this special issue is to explore the development of wireless vehicular
ad hoc network technologies about communication, networking, and
applications. A good communication protocol design can achieve highly
reliable, highly scalable, and high performance. In aspect of
networking, there are many challenges that how to offer quality of
service, build high performance routing, provide mobility management,
and create secure vehicular ad hoc networks. VANET safety applications
include safety warnings and collision avoidance. This is imperious to
improve the non-safety applications and reduce the occurrence of
collision. VANETs present a highly active field of research,
development, standardization and field trials. Throughout the world,
there are many national/international projects in government, industry,
and academia devoted to VANETs, for example consortia like VSC (US),
C2CCC (Europe) and InternetITS (Japan), standardization efforts like
IEEE 802.11p (WAVE) and field trials like the large-scale Vehicle
Infrastructure Integration Program (VII) in the US. The special issue
solicits high-quality theoretical as well as practical works on a broad
range of issues important to the communication, networking, and
applications for vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs). Topics of interest
include but are not limited to following:

- Safety and non-safety applications

- Roadside-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-vehicle communication

- Communication protocol design

- Channel modeling

- Modulation and coding

- Power control and scalability issues

- Multi-channel organization and operation

- Security issues and countermeasures

- Privacy issues

- Network management

- Routing protocol and mobility management

- Simulation frameworks & real-world testbeds

Technology,Nirwan.Ansari@njit.edu Prof. Nidal Nasser, University of
Guelph, nasser@cis.uoguelph.ca SCOPE Multi-hop wireless Ad Hoc and
sensor networks are self-organizing systems formed by co-operating nodes
within communication range of each other that form temporary networks.
Ad hoc wireless networks allow anywhere, anytime network connectivity
with complete lack of control, ownership, and regulatory influence. The
last few years have witnessed a wealth ofresearch ideas on ad hoc and
sensor networks that are moving rapidly into commercialization and
standardization. Such networks can be randomly and rapidly deployed and
reconfigured and easily tailored to specific applications including
entertainment!
, civilian, military, etc. Moreover, an ad hoc architecture is highly
robust to node failure and can provide a high-level of fault tolerance
due to nodal redundancy and its distributed nature. Furthermore, energy
efficiency can be achieved through multi-hop routing communication.
Bandwidth reuse can also benefit from dividing the single long range hop
to multiple short hops with each hop having a shorter range. Several
challenges face are standing in the way to achieving ubiquitous
deployment of ad hoc and sensor networks. These include variable
topology, device heterogeneity, limited power supply and the lack of
effective energy-efficient design, lack of QoS and application
support,etc. This symposium aims at providing a forum for sharing ideas
amongresearchers and practitioners working on state-of-the-art solutions
to the challenges above. We are seeking papers that describe original

are self-organizing systems formed by co-operating nodes within
communication range of each other that form temporary networks. Ad hoc
wireless networks allow anywhere, anytime network connectivity with complete
lack of control, ownership, and regulatory influence. The last few years
have witnessed a wealth ofresearch ideas on ad hoc and sensor networks that
are moving rapidly into commercialization and standardization. Such networks
can be randomly and rapidly deployed and reconfigured and easily tailored to
specific applications including entertainment!
, civilian, military, etc. Moreover, an ad hoc architecture is highly
robust to node failure and can provide a high-level of fault tolerance due
to nodal redundancy and its distributed nature. Furthermore, energy
efficiency can be achieved through multi-hop routing communication.
Bandwidth reuse can also benefit from dividing the single long range hop to
multiple short hops with each hop having a shorter range. Several challenges
face are standing in the way to achieving ubiquitous deployment of ad hoc
and sensor networks. These include variable topology, device heterogeneity,
limited power supply and the lack of effective energy-efficient design, lack
of QoS and application support,etc. This symposium aims at providing a forum

CALL FOR BOOK CHAPTER: Wireless Technologies for Intelligent Transportation Systems

CALL FOR BOOK CHAPTER

Title: Wireless Technologies for Intelligent Transportation Systems
(to be published by Nova Science Publishers, Inc. USA)

[Apologies if you receive this more than once]
*****************************************************************

Introduction

Great achievements have been made in wireless communication
technologies in recent years in order to meet the increasing needs of
high-speed cordless connections in civil and military applications.
The advances include WiFi (IEEE 802.11), WiMAX (IEEE 802.16), Wireless
PAN (IEEE 802.15), sensor networks, Bluetooth, mesh/ad hoc networks,
RFID, mobile IP, mobile management, smart antenna, Radio-over-fiber,
OFDM/OFDMA, MIMO, cooperative communications, cognitive radio, and so
on. These emerging technologies will significantly impact the design
and operation of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), which aims
to effectively provide higher vehicles safety, traffic management, and
communications among vehicles and transport infrastructure. Currently,
governmental institutes and societies in North America, Europe, Japan,
and China, etc., are actively developing advanced wireless
technologies for road, rail and maritime transport systems. For
instance, the Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) band has
been allocated in the USA at 5.9 GHz for vehicle-to-roadside (V2R) and
vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications. The IEEE 802.11p working
group is developing enhancements of 802.11 standards to support ITS,
vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs), vehicular telematics, and
infotainment applications.

Recommended Topics (not limited to)

* Smart antenna in ITS
* Millimeter-wave Radar in ITS
* RFID in ITS
* Radio channel modeling for ITS
* IEEE 802.11p for ITS
* Dedicated Short Range Communications in ITS
* Wireless communications for Maritime ITS
* Sensor networks and technologies for ITS
* Ad hoc/mesh networks for ITS
* Mobile management in ITS
* Vehicular networks
* Heterogeneous networks for ITS
* Digital maps and location technologies
