[Tccc] CFP: PIMRC 2008

===============================================================================================

IEEE PIMRC 2008
Cannes, French Riviera, France
14-18 September 2008

===============================================================================================

Overview:

The annual IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile
Radio
Communications (PIMRC) is one of the premier conferences in the wireless
research
arena and has a long history of bringing together academia, industry and
regulatory
bodies. Today, it has become one of IEEE ComSoc's flagship conferences
in telecommunications.

The 19th edition of PIMRC will be held from 14-18 September 2008 in
glamorous Cannes,
French Riviera, France, at the "Palais des Festivals de Cannes" where
traditionally the
Cannes Film Festival is being held. With Cannes being one of the most
charming places on
earth, we expect this to be a truly special conference.

Focus:

PIMRC 2008 will provide a global forum for presenting the most recent
advances, the future
technical challenges and business opportunities that comprise the
contemporary landscape in
wireless communications. The organizers endeavour to attract
contributions covering not only
conventional areas of wireless communications (e.g., physical layer),
but also emerging areas
with high potential for essential scientific and societal impact such as
wireless sensors for
biomedical applications, non-trivial pervasive computing services and
ambient technologies.
The latter areas are expected to facilitate the development of a broad
vision of innovative
future applications in wireless communications. The high quality IEEE
endorsed technical programme,
will also include tutorials, workshops, exhibitions, panel discussions
and keynote presentations
from leading experts coming from the academic community, industry, as
well as regulatory and
standardisation bodies.

Call for Papers:

Authors are invited to submit high-quality papers describing original
and previously unpublished
contributions in a wide range of topics in wireless communications.
These topics are clustered
into the following three major categories:

1) Physical Layer and MAC
2) Mobile and Wireless Networks
3) Applications, Services and Business Models

Papers should be in English, strictly not exceeding 5 double-column
pages. Authors should use the
relevant IEEE template, ensuring an IEEE Xplore compatible PDF-format.
To access the full list of
topics, submission guidelines, as well as venue and travel information
please visit www.pimrc2008.org.

[Tccc] CFP: ComNet - Special Issue on Autonomic and Self-Organising Systems

==========================================================================
CFP: COMPUTER NETWORKS JOURNAL
*Special Issue on Autonomic and Self-Organising Systems*
( http://www.elsevier.com/locate/comnet )
==========================================================================

_CONTEXT_

The complexities of modern computing and communications systems are
well-known, as are the impact that these complexities have on their
construction, composition, management, maintenance and evolution. It is
now well-accepted that the total costs of ownership can have a significant
effect on the economics of many service offerings, and that unmanageable
complexity can threaten life and economic health in the event of failures.

Autonomic computing and communications apply notions of feedback control,
self-organisation, monitoring and reasoning to the construction and
management of large systems. Originally suggested by IBM as a way to
control total costs of ownership, the fields have expanded to address the
design and implementation of stable, "self-*" algorithms as well as the
overall design and analysis of adaptive properties and behaviour. Such
self-* systems offer to improve the dynamic responses of systems to
changing conditions, simplifying their construction, management and
deployment.

Although often considered separately, the interdependence of computing and
communications in the modern world implies that we apply autonomic
techniques on a whole-system basis that encompasses both aspects of
systems design. In this special issue we have two aims: to provide a guide
to a unified field of autonomic computing and communications through
invited contributions addressing cross-system and whole-system techniques;
and to present novel research contributions that advance the state of
autonomic and self-organising systems design. With this in mind, we invite
research contributions including (but most definitely not limited to) the
following topics:
- techniques for self-organisation at a system level,
- foundational science of autonomics and self-organisation,
- application of novel techniques to large-scale problems,
- self-stabilising and self-optimising algorithms,
- evaluations and evaluation methodologies for self-organising systems,
- managing trade-offs between system aspects.

Contributions addressing issues that cross between the autonomic computing
and communication fields are particularly welcome.

Call for Papers

Overview
----------
Traditional wireless communication systems were providing very few or no
adaptation capabilities at all, as a result of the limited
transmission requirements that they were asked to fulfill. Nowadays, the
efficient support of a wide set of traffic kinds is
considered as one of the most important issues for modern wireless
communication systems. Different performance
improvement mechanisms are introduced in almost all layers of a typical
wireless protocol stack, trying to address this issue,
each one from a different perspective. However, in order to maximize the
optimization capability of each separate mechanism,
there is a need for the development of an efficient scheme that will
coordinate their operation. This requirement emerges from
the fact that, although each mechanism may be efficient or even optimal in
terms of the respective protocol layer, their
independent parallel operation may result in inefficiencies caused
mainly by
possible conflicting actions. A solution to this
problem is the introduction of cross-layer cooperative designs that can
maximize the optimization capabilities of individual layers
by combining and synchronizing their operation, and result in an efficient
operation of the system as a whole.

Scope
-------
Many proposals can be found in the literature following different
approaches
for cross-layering. Many of them focus on the
cooperation of the Medium Access Control (MAC) with the Physical layer,
while others include higher layers as well, such as the
Network or the Application. ISWPC 2008 is organizing a special session on
"Cross-layer designs for wireless pervasive computing"
aiming to provide a forum for reviewing the current state-of-the-art in the
area, exchanging of ideas and viewpoints, and discussing
future directions. Topics include, but are not limited to:
- Cross-layer architectures and methodologies
- Quality-of-service solutions
- Channel-aware applications
- Cross-layering for mobility management
- Complexity and scalability issues
- Signaling for cross-layer protocol interaction
- Case studies
- Performance evaluation

Submission
-----------
Authors are invited to submit original papers through the regular
conference
process (http://www.iswpc.org/2008/) and send
