Overview
----------
Traditional wireless communication systems were providing very few or no
adaptation capabilities at all, as a result of the limited
transmission requirements that they were asked to fulfill. Nowadays, the
efficient support of a wide set of traffic kinds is
considered as one of the most important issues for modern wireless
communication systems. Different performance
improvement mechanisms are introduced in almost all layers of a typical
wireless protocol stack, trying to address this issue,
each one from a different perspective. However, in order to maximize the
optimization capability of each separate mechanism,
there is a need for the development of an efficient scheme that will
coordinate their operation. This requirement emerges from
the fact that, although each mechanism may be efficient or even optimal in
terms of the respective protocol layer, their
independent parallel operation may result in inefficiencies caused
mainly by
possible conflicting actions. A solution to this
problem is the introduction of cross-layer cooperative designs that can
maximize the optimization capabilities of individual layers
by combining and synchronizing their operation, and result in an efficient
operation of the system as a whole.

Scope
-------
Many proposals can be found in the literature following different
approaches
for cross-layering. Many of them focus on the
cooperation of the Medium Access Control (MAC) with the Physical layer,
while others include higher layers as well, such as the
Network or the Application. ISWPC 2008 is organizing a special session on
"Cross-layer designs for wireless pervasive computing"
aiming to provide a forum for reviewing the current state-of-the-art in the
area, exchanging of ideas and viewpoints, and discussing
future directions. Topics include, but are not limited to:
- Cross-layer architectures and methodologies
- Quality-of-service solutions
- Channel-aware applications
- Cross-layering for mobility management
- Complexity and scalability issues
- Signaling for cross-layer protocol interaction
- Case studies
- Performance evaluation

Submission
-----------
Authors are invited to submit original papers through the regular
conference
process (http://www.iswpc.org/2008/) and send
the paper details to the session organizer at passas@di.uoa.gr to indicate
submission for the special session. All accepted papers
will be included in the conference proceedings.

Important dates
----------------
Papers submission: November 2, 2007
Notification of acceptance: January 9, 2008
